About Us

Lowell House is a 28-story high rise structure with a total of 252 residential units consisting of studio and one bedroom apartments.  Lowell House is part of Carl Sandburg Village and is located at 88 W. Schiller Street in Chicago, IL. -- just three blocks from Lake Michigan and Lincoln Park.

Construction of Lowell House was completed in 1968 and opened as a rental building.  On December 10, 1979 the building converted to condominium and incorporated as an Illinois not-for-profit corporation.

Carl Sandburg Village consists of 2,610 units in 8 high-rise buildings, one mid-rise and 60 townhomes / artist studios.  The Carl Sandburg Village Homeowner's Association is responsible for the Village common elements including the two swimming pools, tennis courts, commercial spaces, walkways, driveways, landscaping and snow removal.  The buildings are managed by their own associations and assessments are paid to the individual associations as well as to the Village homeowners association.

It is worth mentioning that Carl Sandburg Village was a pioneering urban renewal concept that was clearly successful. The builder, Arthur Rubloff developed the theory of the project in the 1953 and broke ground on May 8, 1962 with Mayor Richard J. Daley present.  It has been called one of the greatest middle-class urban renewal projects in the country.

The names of the buildings in the Village are legendary authors, writers and poets.  Carl Sandburg was a Pulitzer Prize winning Chicago historian, journalist and poet.  Lowell House is named after American poet and critic Amy Lowell (February 9, 1874 - May 12, 1925).  Ms. Lowell was a leading spokesperson for the American poetry and modern European trends.  Amy Lowell is best known for bringing the Imagist movement to America. Her own poetry is especially noted for individuality, vivid movement and blazes of color. She received numerous academic awards and did receive a Pulitzer Prize for What's O'Clock (1925).  She was considered a leader in the poetry movement and supported many of her peers, notably fellow poet, Carl Sandburg.
